Special Items

Special Items are unique resources in 99 Nights in the Forest that serve critical progression or trading functions. Unlike standard materials like Wood or Scrap, these items cannot be used in conventional crafting but are essential for obtaining powerful gear or completing the game’s main objective. They are divided into two main categories: Pelts for trading and Keys for progression.

Trading Items: Pelts

Pelts are a special class of resource obtained by hunting the various animals found in the forest. Their sole purpose is to serve as currency for the Pelt Trader, a wandering NPC who offers exclusive and powerful items like Armor, the Katana, and upgraded tools. The value of a pelt is determined by the rarity and danger of the animal it comes from.

Progression Item: Keys

Keys are critical quest items whose only function is to unlock the cages found within the Caves where the missing children are being held captive. Rescuing all four children is the primary objective of the game, making the acquisition of these keys an essential part of the main progression.

KeyKeys are found within the same Cave system as a trapped child. They are typically located inside a special, high-tier loot container, often a Ruby Chest, that is hidden or guarded within the cave.Used to unlock the specific cage holding a missing child, allowing them to be rescued. Each key corresponds to one child.

How Keys Work

  • One Key Per Cave: Each of the four caves holding a child contains one key. You do not need to find a key elsewhere and bring it to the cave.
  • Finding the Key: The primary challenge is locating the key within the cave. Caves are dangerous, maze-like environments filled with hostile Wolves and other potential threats. Players must explore thoroughly, often navigating dark tunnels and fighting off enemies to find the chest containing the key.
  • Unlocking the Cage: Once the key is acquired, players can proceed to the cage where the child is held and interact with it to use the key, completing the rescue for that area.
  • Visual Cues: The chests containing keys often have a distinct appearance, such as being a rare Ruby Chest, signaling their importance to the player.
